Acupressure for anxiety

These days, anxiety is becoming a common problem for most of the people. Anxiety is usually a normal reaction to a stressful situation that is occurring in your life. However, sometimes we may experience anxiety even though the stress is not that big, or we find ourselves worrying about everything in life. This excessive worrying can begin to disrupt our sleep, making it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep. Phobias of social situations or other circumstances may also induce anxiety. In severe cases, anxiety can cause panic attacks with symptoms including shortness of breath, nausea, sweating, dizziness, chest pain, or uncontrollable crying.

Anxiety is also known to be an extreme reaction by an individual to a highly unfavourable situation or in cases where an individual is facing extreme mental pressure causing a nervous breakdown or other forms of mental illness .Though this is specific to individuals based on personality traits which are developed over a period of time and have a lot of influencing factors e.g. Upbringing, education, social circle and also food intake and eating habits.

Acupressure can be used to manage our anxiety or may function as complementary care along with prescribed medication or therapy. It has been an established medical practice in China for five thousand years. It is a great way for dealing with anxiety attacks. The great thing about acupressure is it is something you can do on your own to promote health, relieve stress and prevent disease. In various situations i.e. home, on the road (Traffic) or even at a social gathering where the medical assistance might not be easily accessible, acupressure for anxiety will provide instant relief.

It is similar to the Chinese form of healing, acupuncture, but instead it mainly makes use of applying pressure to the hands, and sometimes to other parts of the body such as the feet and elbows. This form of healing is completely natural, with no side effects and yields instantaneous results, which is the number one reason for its popularity.

Acupressure activates the free flow of energy in the body, and helps in healing disorders such as anxiety and stress. It helps in curing both physical and mental fitness of a human body by applying pressure to know points of a human body, which primarily dictate the flow of energy(Qi).Thus via acupressure one can control the flow of hormones and nerve cells which could be a cause of pain, discomfort to an individual .Hence this form medication can contribute in fixing both, the symptoms for an immediate relief and cure the illness itself if practised continually over a period of time .

During an acupressure session, the therapist will find out if there is any blockage of energy in the body. These obstructions are usually caused by sentiments, incorrect postures or other contaminants generated by the body. For example, many people complain about inflexibility on hamstring or calves area. In many cases, their urinary and kidney meridian or energy channels are blocked; having pills and other form of oral medication at this stage either might worsen the state or may lead to an alternate support system in the body making the patient dependent or habitual to the oral intake. Acupressure on the other hand will treat the root cause of the problem enabling the body to achieve the state of self-healing.

There are several acupressure points that can help us manage anxiety with immediate relief. Acupressure should be applied from top to bottom, starting with Yin Tang, then Pericardium 6, and finally Kidney 1. Treating these acupressure points should have immediate effects on your mental state and provide a calming relief.

Some of the more common know techniques to handle extreme stress, mentally drain state and anxiety.

Yin Tang is a very popular point to use among acupuncturists.  It calms the mind, body, &spirit and can help ease worries as well as sinus blockage. Massage on the point located between the eyebrows using the index finger in a counterclockwise motion (toward your right eye) to invoke calmness and a clockwise position (toward your left eye) to revitalize your mind.

Calm your heart rate with ‘Inner Gate’ i.e. "Inner Gate" on the pericardium channel; it is referred to as the ‘Gateway’ referring to its ability to be the entry to the heart. Located three finger measurement below the wrist on the inner forearm (palm side of the hand) in-between the two tendons. Recommended is to use the right hand thumb to press on the left wrist, the left side being more effective for anxiety as it is on the same side of the heart. Massage for five seconds steadily on the pressure point to stimulate the area. This should be repeated5 to 6 times focusing on the sorest area in the effected region.

Battling an anxiety situation- Great Tower Gate is located directly above the umbilicus and right below the diaphragm in the apex where the ribs meet. This point is usually sore for individuals with anxiety who have difficulty in exhaling and inhaling deep breath. It is used to help pain in the cardiac region, reduce palpitations, and can help with stomach pain and vomiting. Compression on this region can help secure a deep breath when narrow, and hasty breathing occurs during an anxiety attack.

High on Tension, go for your ears (Best for kids) -1) gently massage ears with your thumb and forefinger. Focusing at the back of the ears give yourself a relaxing ear massage. Pull down gently on the hemispheres and rub the inner surface of the ear for about 2-3 minutes. Calmness and soothing will begin to be felt as you progress with the gentle bodywork. 2) Apply pressure with your thumb at the point where your wrist forms a crease with your hand. Grip on the acupressure point for about 2 minutes, applying a generous amount of pressure. This point is good for relieving tension and for overall tranquillity of the body and mind.
