What is acupressure

Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine bodywork technique based on the same ideas as Acupuncture.


It involves placing physical pressure, by hand, elbow, or with the aid of various devices, on different pressure points on the surface of the body (which may be far distant from the symptom, related by what is called the meridian system) to bring about relief through greater balance and circulation of fluids (blood, lymph) and metabolic energies in the body (heat). Originated in Ancient China about 5,000 years ago, Acupressure serves great benefits to patients and doctors.

It is generally used by professionals to reduce pain, tiredness and tension in the body. It is also used to stop or increase the blood circulation of a person with use of fingers or external equipment. It is applicable both by a professional practitioner or the person itself although a person for help is always recommended. Soft pressure allows increased blood flow while deep pressure can stop blood from circulating in cases of snake bite or major cuts from rusted objects.

An expert acupressurist presses the 'Trigger Points' to release tension and stress from the body. It also relaxes the mind and makes the body feel fresh. There innumerable trigger points with some major being behind the neck, below the feet, behind palm, etc. Some skilled workers use acupressure with some other types of massages combined like the Reiki, healing touch, bending of foot, etc. Everyone does not use the same technique and it may vary from place to place, country to country. Like in some places, traditional Chinese method is used while in some places, a Japanese adaptation of acupressure, 'Shiatsu' is a lot helpful. In some areas like South Korea, Su Jok is exercised which is considered to be the easiest form of Acupressure.

Acupressure is like Yoga and Meditation, with almost same health and mind benefits. It gives peace and strength to the mind and helps the working of systems and organs. It has almost no side effects and is purely a natural solution for all stress and tension related ailments. It improves reflexes and decreases risks of sudden illness and other diseases like migraine, body ache, irritation, etc. It can also cure certain parts of body like hands, head and legs which maybe suffering from minor or major tiredness. It is known for its self dependent capabilities. It enhances muscle tone and increases blood circulation to the face. This can reduce the appearance of wrinkles without drugs or surgery. Applying pressure normally on specific points, along with therapeutic facial exercises, relieves congested areas and relaxes the muscles. Thus toxins are released and eliminated, helping the outward appearance.

 In short, Acupressure is still the most trusted and practiced source and technique of stress and ailment remover. General awareness is required to make everyone know about its benefits.
